Eli paced from one side of the shed to the other. Then she sat down for awhile. Then she stood up and paced some more. Then she cracked open the door a little and peeked out. Then repeated the whole thing again.

Forever will she be this way
A child hunting for her prey
Murdering the world around
Upon her onyx wings

My savior, her hand rests in mine
The pact we hold is love sublime
A necessary companionship
With her, I shall remain

We are each imperfect beings
Distant fringes of society's meanings
My existence lives alone
Beside her tattered smile

Her acts I never can repay
For her I will remain enslaved
And hold this love until I burn
In her immortal light

And until this mortal pulse has died
I shall never leave her eyes
For my flesh and blood remains
Beside her onyx wings

Somebody's knocking at the door. Nobody knows I live here. I hope. Could it be a salesman or something? Trust me, whoever you are, you don't have anything I want.

No, bitch, not now. You left witnesses at the last meal! You didn't kill what you ate! That's bad. That's very bad, but maybe nobody knew who I was. Hakan died to keep this place a secret, did things to himself I can't imagine, and then you go and do something like that? And then you want to eat right here where I live? You're an idiot.

Like that's news, huh?

I don't want to eat. I'm too tired to eat. I'm empty, really really empty, but you can't hunt down and find what I need. I'd sleep if I could.

Wait... that's not knocking. That's Morse code!

Oskar stood, shivering, and stared at the door of the mausoleum. A faint brightening of the eastern sky heralded the approaching dawn.

N O T H I N G

Piteous
Nameless neighbor,
Accursed wastrel, who
Like the uncanny vixen
Lanky, skulks unseen the
Unkempt periphery of settled life.

Enfant terrible,
Spectral, savaged gelding,
Long ago infected
With a loathsome lineage of bite and night
Disconsolate, despised
A life two-centuries lifeless.

I mourn for you
Unwelcome orphan
Who like an ancient,
Chthonic goddess,
Was cast away
Mutilated, damaged always,
Forever in famine -- never satiated,
Left ravening for floods of blood
To fill her toothy maw

Oskar, You are the answer which my soul has been
longing for.

How could I have fathomed that my salvation would
come to me bearing a puzzle of colors?

The warmth of your kindness has melted the icy
barricades within and awakened my hope.

Your unyielding acceptance causes me to fear the
loss of that which I have found and find precious.

Your sincere embrace gives my mind reason to
tremble yet causes my heart to leap.

Too many scores have passed since I knew the
sun but in you I know true light.

(Interior running monologue in one of my interpretations of Eli's character at the candy store. Cleaned up from an original that may still surface, and amplified somewhat, but you still probably don't want the kids reading it.)

He's asking me to wait here. Oh, he's getting candy? I used to like candy, didn't I? I don't remember. Ugh, that stuff stinks! How can people eat it? Why do people have to eat so much?

Oh, crap, there's a cat. I didn't see it in time. Good thing it's behind glass. I really don't feel like killing anything right now. Not with Oskar right here. Did Oskar see the cat spazz out at me? No, he was looking the other way. Nobody saw it. Good. Very good. I'll just move away a little.

Oskar vomited into the toilet. Most of his dinner came out the first time, and a little more on the second round. Then he endured some dry heaves before he finally felt better.

Oskar and Eli hear my voice and ponder my words.

To most Fate is cruel and scornful, a tyrant who delights in the
misery of man.
Yet upon your two souls she has cast favor and allowed your lives
to mingle.
Esteem lightly not her favor for she is proud and takes delight in the
sorrows of those who refuse her.
In her morbid collection of mankind's aspirations she takes much joy.

Oskar, cling to that which so many have striven, bled and perished
for without ever knowing fully.
Understand what is before you, look not with your eyes.
